Designing a Luxury New Build in the Heart of Surrey.
At Lloyd Harden Design, we’re fortunate to work on a wide range of projects, and every now and then, something truly exceptional comes along. This contemporary countryside home was one of those moments.
Nestled in a remote spot in Surrey, our client approached us with a clear yet ambitious vision: to design a striking, three-bedroom luxury home with a fully usable basement. And not just any basement, a spa retreat and a full sized bowling alley were on the wishlist. Our goal was to create a modern home with a nod to agricultural barn aesthetic fusing functionality with bold design choices. And honestly, we think we nailed it.
A New Build That’s Anything But Ordinary
This isn’t your average countryside dwelling. Designed to echo the silhouette of a traditional barn, the exterior plays with symmetry and volume using dark cladding, expansive glazing, and subtle stone detailing to blend beautifully with its rural surroundings.
But it’s what’s inside that really sets this project apart. The layout is built to impress, from the sweeping open-plan living spaces on the ground floor to the spa and leisure space below. The upstairs design maximises views, privacy, and natural light, with spacious bedrooms and a first floor terrace for relaxing or entertaining
Lloyd’s Key Takeaways From The Project
We asked Lloyd to share a few of his reflections from this exciting project:
1. You can be bold, even in the countryside
Contemporary architecture and rural locations don’t have to clash. In fact, when done well, they really complement each other. Our use of natural materials and barn inspired structure allowed us to push the boundaries without losing the essence of the landscape.
2. Functionality doesn’t mean compromising on form
Fitting a bowling alley and spa into a home might sound like a logistical nightmare, but with careful planning and zoning, it actually created a better flow throughout the house.
3. Collaboration makes all the difference
Our client brought loads of energy and enthusiasm to the project. It’s been a fun, collaborative process from day one. It really is one of those dream partnerships that makes our job even more rewarding.
